Struggling to Feel Inspired? Me Too!
Feeling uninspired? Let's look at navigating the challenges of consistency and creativity.
Did you notice I wasn’t in your inbox last week? The answer is probably not. But for me, I felt plagued with guilt that I didn’t write and share a post.
Why? Well, because I’ve shared a new post each week since September 2023, and I felt like I’d failed, yet again at keeping a routine. However, for us neurodivergent folks, habits, consistency, and routines can be our biggest struggle.
So with that, I’m trying not to dwell on what I consider to be a failure, and focus more on it being a hiccup. That one missed week isn’t the worst thing in the world, and the most important part is getting back into it. My goal is to make sure I don’t let a blip in posting become two weeks, as that’s where the slippery slope starts.
Anyway, I’ve digressed enough.
One of the main reasons I’ve not written anything in two months — except my quick post about getting a permanent job — is because I feel like I’ve got nothing to say.
Now I know that isn’t really true, as I could talk for England if it was an Olympic sport. But what I’ve found is that nothing feels interesting to me. With some quiet time thinking and then suddenly becoming inspired by something I read, I realised that I write often and with enjoyment when I’ve learnt something. Usually, my writing is sparked when I’ve been exposed to a new concept or perhaps I’ve come across someone’s opinion that I strongly agree or disagree with.
So with that, like all things in life that are good for us, I’ve come to realise to write more and to write with enjoyment I have to be intentional and set myself up with a framework or at least some activities that set me on the right path of letting inspiration find me. We tend to think of inspiration as a lightning bolt that just comes when it feels like it, but the most creative people craft a routine or behaviours that make it easier and quicker for inspiration to strike.
For me and writing, this looks like reading more books and spending less time on LinkedIn. It means more quiet time, and less busyness of mentoring, working, and other commitments I tend to pile on myself.
So if you’re struggling with inspiration or feeling motivated to do a hobby or job you love, ask yourself what habits, activities, or behaviours did you have in place when you did love it? What led you to be energised? Perhaps give those behaviours and routines another try and see what happens, even just as an experiment.
