Love this evolution! I like your newsletter cos you give advice that you can actually use, that doesn't feel daunting.

My question is: How else can one improve their UI skills especially if they don't have the budget to enrol in a course?

Thank you so much! I really do appreciate it 🙏🏻

Great question!

The most effective and cost-free method to enhance UI skills is to practice through imitation. Just as aspiring artists spend countless hours in museums replicating masterpieces, people looking to enhance their UI skills can learn by emulating elements of UI design.

This approach isn’t just about replication; it’s an opportunity to jump into critical analysis. For instance, when copying a button or a card layout from a website, ask yourself questions:

- Why does this particular font work well?

- How many fonts are being used, and what's the rationale behind their selection?

- Why choose these colours over others?

- What’s the logic behind the spacing?

- Is it consistent, and are there any underlying patterns or grids?

As well as hands-on practice, adding in some theoretical knowledge is super helpful.

There are numerous free resources available online, including articles and YouTube tutorials, focusing on topics like colour theory and typography. Building a strong foundation in these areas will significantly help anyone looking to improve their UI design skills.

Here's a couple of great UI videos:
